Bogota is the fifth most expensive city in Latin America for expatriates, according to a study by consultancy firm Mercer.
Bogota came 66th out of 214 cities worldwide. The Colombian capital has become more expensive for expats since last year, when it was ranked 120th out of 143 cities.
Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro are ranked the highest out of Latin America, at 21st and 29th respectively. At third place is Havana, ranked 45th, Bogota, 66th, and Brasilia, ranked 70th. Venezuelan capital Caracas comes in at 100th place.
This year saw an increasing number of African cities climb higher in the ranking, with Luanda in Angola winning the title of the world’s most expensive city for expatriates
After Luanda, the world’s next four most expensive cities are: Tokyo; Ndjamena in Chad; Moscow; and Geneva. New York is the costliest city in the United States,
At the other end of the spectrum, the cheapest city in the world is Karachi, the most populated city in Pakistan.
Eight European cities feature in the top twenty. Among them are Zurich (8), Copenhagen (10) and Oslo (11), Milan (15) whilst London and Paris are jointly ranked 17th.
The annual survey by Mercer compares the cost of housing, education, medical care, utilities and transportation, food, clothing and entertainment.
