A temporary exhibition of music, dance and exquisite costumes celebrating the cultural heritage of Colombia is being held at The National Museum of Bogota.
The exhibition, named Monument to Thought: Heritage of Colombia to Humanity, takes inspiration from Colombia’s UNESCO’s concept of intangible cultural heritage, meaning a culture which is not simply a monument or object, but rather abstract and impermanent, such as performing arts or even a festival.
One highlight of the display is the Festival of Barranquilla, which is one cultural event UNESCO has placed on its list of “Intangible Cultural Heritage” due to its blend of European, African and Indigenous culture, expressed through music, dance, and handcrafted objects.
The exhibition hopes to capture the spirit of Colombia’s 14 world heritage sites and cultural events through a combination of displayed works of art, physical recreations of heritage sites, displays of carnival costumes, and other cultural artifacts.
Monument to Thought will be running until January 13, 2013, and the good news for all visitors is that there is no entrance fee.
