Homicides in Colombia’s capital city have decreased in number, while the suicide rate has risen drastically, according to information from the Bogota police, local media reported Wednesday.
According to acting Bogota Mayor Maria Fernanda Campo, during the first five months of 2011 there was a 5% reduction in cases of homicide in the city, compared with the same period of 2010, reported Caracol Radio.
The Bogota Metropolitan Police reported 31 less cases this year, with 628 cases, compared to last year’s 659.
Meanwhile, authorities reported an approximately 25% rise in Bogota’s 2011 suicide rate, with 113 cases documented compared with 90 cases for the same period in 2010.
In regards to security, the mayor also praised the House approval of the Citizen Security Law on Tuesday, stating that, “in the case of being approved the statute will provide new tools to the authorities in order to lower the statistics of insecurity in the country’s capital.”
