Battle for Falcao heats up with Chelsea, Real Madrid ‘interested’

Colombian forward Radamel Falcao has been widely reported to be the target of European soccer behemoths Chelsea and Real Madrid after completing an extremely successful season both personally and with his club Porto.

The European media is always alive with the buzz of transfer rumors during the summer break, as fans and journalists alike eagerly await the new season, and the current speculation has fallen on Radamel Falcao.

He is currently plying his trade in Portugal with Porto, where he completed a record-breaking season scoring 18 goals in the Europa League alone, firing them to victory in the final. He finished the season with impressive statistics of 38 goals in just 42 games, helping Porto to dominate their domestic league and win by an astonishing 21 points.

Porto’s success has not gone unnoticed by the world’s biggest clubs, with Chelsea announcing the appointment of 33-year-old Andre Villas-Boas, the now ex-Porto coach, on Wednesday morning.

Speculation is rife that Falcao will follow his former manager to the English Premier League’s runners-up, although reports state that the London side face stiff competition from the likes of Real Madrid, with coach Jose Mourinho in the market for a new center forward.

Falcao is expected to fetch at least $40 million if he does indeed leave Porto, although he has stated that he is in no rush to leave the Portuguese champions. He issued a communique Tuesday distancing himself from Claudio Mossio, who had incorrectly appeared in some media sources as his agent and had stated that the player wanted a move to Chelsea. Falcao himself remained non-committal over his future in the statement.

The forward has also been consistently linked with London sides Arsenal and Tottenham, although it would seem that the Colombian may now be out of their price range.

The 25-year-old is currently away on international duty, with Colombia preparing for the Copa America in Argentina with a friendly Wednesday night against Mexico.
