The Bahia Malaga Fauna and Flora Sanctuary in the west of Colombia will officially become a National Park.
After more than five years of negotiations and discussions between communities and the government, Bahia Malaga will be listed as number 55 on the official list of Colombian Nature Parks.
The Pacific reservation covers 50,000 hectares of which 90 percent are in the sea. “It’s the most important ecosystems in the Colombian Pacific,” Hernando Zambrano, consultant for WWF, said.
Bahia Malaga is famous for whale watching. Between 500 and 700 Humpback whales arrive each year at the warm and calm waters of the Pacific Coast to give birth.
The whales can be watched from June until October.
