The arrest of seven suspected members of a drug gang in the north of Colombia has left the organization originally set up by paramilitary drug lord “Don Mario” basically dismantled, said Colombian authorities.
According to newspaper El Tiempo, the seven detainees belong to “Aguilas Gaitanistas de Colombia” and reportedly inherited the drug business of Don Mario after his arrest in April 2009.
The seven alleged drug traffickers were arrested in the north Antioquia town of Taraza and several towns in the Cordoba department.
Among the detainees is “Pipon,” the alleged leader of the group, who is wanted by authorities for hundreds of crimes, the newspaper reported.
A prosecutor told El Tiempo that the arrest of the seven suspects leaves the organization once led by “Don Mario” practically dismantled.
The group is suspected of using go-fast boats to ship cocaine destined for the United States to Central America.
