An explosives attack on an oil pipeline in the north of Colombia has caused an oil spill in the Catatumbo river, RCN Radio reported Wednesday.
The explosion took place in the municipality of El Tarra, located in the region where the FARC has been carrying out several attacks in the past week.
Nevertheless, Petronorte, owner of the pipeline, said in a press release that “we can not point the finger at anyone, but we do know it was an attack.”
Petronorte representative Renzo Zoronado told RCN Radio that “we have activated contingency plans in order to control the oil that spilled into the river, but it’s almost impossible. Every time there is an attack, there always will be spilling.”
The security situation has prevented the oil company from moving into the region to repair the pipeline. Army reinforcements are expected to arrive to allow oil workers to repair the pipeline and clean up the spilled oil.
The attack on the oil pipeline is the second this year.
