The Colombian army says it put a giant Christmas tree in the middle of a FARC-controlled area to encourage rebels to demobilize.
According to the army’s website, it took two Black Hawk helicopters with the ground support of 200 military engineers and soldiers more than four days to decorate the 75-foot tree to the jungle area in the central Meta department.
The massive tree was equipped with 2,000 lights which are activated by motion detectors.
The move, dubbed “Operation Christmas,” is intended to “invite guerrillas to recover their freedom.”
The army plans to put another nine Christmas trees in FARC-controlled areas in other parts of the country.
