Some 200,700 members of Colombia’s security forces will be assigned to protect proceedings from possible attacks by guerilla groups such as the FARC, in the Andean nation’s upcoming presidential elections., the Colombian government announced Tuesday.
National Police Commissioner, General Oscar Naranjo said that there was a particular risk of terrorist attacks in the departments of Huila, Cauca and Caqueta, reports El Colombiano.
Naranjo said that, along with the increased security, the “flow of cash throughout the country will be strictly controlled” to avoid the buying and selling of votes.
Earler on Tuesday, Colombia’s vice defense minister Alejandro Arbelaez said he wanted to work with the National Registry to prevent potential cyber-terrorist attacks by hackers on presidential candidates.
Last week Colombian authorities announced new security measures including an additional 500 police to protect candidates inthe lead-up to the presidential elections.
Colombians will go to the polls on May 30 to elect their next president.
