The Colombian Army and the ELN made arrangements in the east of
Colombia to fight the FARC, phone conversations published by Semana
show. This while President Uribe has pressed the army to improve
results against Colombia’s second largest guerrilla force.
According to the weekly, several members of the militarymade alliances with members of the ELN since 2006, allowing the army to enjoy a more successful fight against the FARC, but allowing the ELN to gain power in the area that’s very important for coca cultivation.
In one conversation one army commander agrees to withdraw his troops from the area where FARC guerrillas were present. The deal was that the ELN would then go in to murder them and leave the bodies to the army so they could be presented as casualties of war.
According to Semana, the Prosecution so far hasn’t been able to take appropriate action against the members of the army involved in the deals, but the guerrila has been able to benefit and has gained ground in Arauca.
