‘Colombians for Peace’, a group of self-proclaimed intellectuals led by
senator Piedad Córdoba, plans to confront the FARC with the question
whether they are ready to stop using kidnappings in their armed battle.
The group would like to see a definitive answer to this question, following last week’s liberation of six hostages including politicians Alan Jara and Sigifredo Lopez.
In an interview with El Espectador newspaper, spokesman of the ‘Movement of Victims of State Crimes’, Iván Cepeda, explained that members of the group are to meet on Tuesday in order to determine the exact content of the letter that is to be sent to the FARC.
Colombians for Peace is heavily in favor of a ‘humanitary exchange’, in which the FARC would release its hostages while the state releases FARC members from its prisons. FARC leader Alfonso Cano already expressed his interest in such a solution, while president Alvaro Úribe might agree to the exchange, under particular conditions.
