The Andean Community of Nations (CAN) has expressed their approval of peace talks between the Colombian government and FARC guerrillas, reported Caracol Radio Thursday.
The Andean communities of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru approved the “Declaration of Guayaquil” on Wednesday in Ecuador in which they have expressed their support to President Juan Manuel Santos in his attempts to reach a formal peace agreement with Colombia’s largest guerrilla group.
Santos confirmed that his government would talk with FARC guerrillas on August 27 and attempt to come to a formal agreement through “exploratory conversations.” The Andean Parliament backs and applauds the gestures that Colombia is making to achieve peace and end nearly 50 years of armed conflict in the country.
During their plenary, the customs union of the Andean community supported the president’s “intention of reaching peace in Colombia through dialogue that has started,” and highlighted that from now on the process is “distinguished by its transparency and respect to the human rights of Colombians.”
