Colombia’s National Police said on Monday they had confiscated property belonging to an alleged finance chief of rebel group FARC.
The 33 properties and one car allegedly belonged to “Jorge” or “El Doctor,” who Police director General Rodolfo Palomino accused of being the finance chief of the FARC’s 27th front, a rebel unit active in central Colombia.
According to Palomino, authorities had been working for months and followed the FARC’s money trail to get to the confiscated properties.
The fugitive “Jorge” is wanted by authorities for conspiracy, rebellion, drug trafficking and money laundering. The alleged rebel is accused of having used money that was obtained by drug trafficking for the purchase of arms and explosives for the FARC.
The operation leading to the confiscation of property of the alleged rebel is part of a wider offensive that seeks to weaken illegal armed groups’ business interests in Colombia.
