With 98.36% of votes counted in the final round of the presidential election, Partido de la U candidate Juan Manuel Santos is the clear winner of the presidency of Colombia.
So far Santos has 68.93% of the vote. The former defense minister’s opponent Antanas Mockus cannot overtake Santos, having received 27.64% of the votes counted so far, according to Colombian Registry Office’s 17th bulletin.
Santos has received 8,889,187 of the votes counted so far, while Mockus has received 3,552,353. The Green candidate received 500,000 more votes than in the Andean nation’s first round election.
In 2002, incumbent President Alvaro Uribe won his first term as president outright in the first round with 5,862,655 votes – 53% of the total vote.
Santos will receive the keys to the Casa de Nariño from Uribe on August 7.
