Colombian presidential candidate Antanas Mockus will meet Gustavo Petro to discuss whether Polo Democratico will align with the Green Party in the second round presidential election scheduled for June 20.
Clara Lopez Obregon, Petro’s running mate, confirmed that Mockus will meet with the unsuccessful presidential candidate at 3 PM local time.
Despite a public Twitter dispute between the two candidates, in which Mockus ruled out a second round election alliance with Polo Democratico, to which Petro replied “Goodbye Mockus, we’ll go it alone,” Lopez was hopeful that a coalition would be formed.
Mockus won 21.47% of the vote in last Sunday’s first round presidential elections. Petro, with 9.16%, came in fourth and is now out of the running. Because the Partido de la U candidate Juan Manuel Santos won the round with 46.57% of the vote, the Green Party must form a coalition if they have any chance of winning the second round runoff with Santos on Sunday June 20.
Mockus and Petro are expected to announce a decision on a second round alliance Thursday afternoon.
