Colombia’s Prosecutor General opened investigations into eleven suspected cases of electoral irregularities that occured during the nation’s first round presidential elections.
The cases, reported by both officials and citizens, pertain to allegations of electoral fraud, fraudulent voting, corruption of voters, falsifications, altering and hiding results, and the retention and illicit possession of identification, according to a press release published by the Prosecutor General.
The national police’s investigative department reported eight people were arrested for voting related crimes, while 61 citizens who had warrants out for their arrest, were detained by police when they showed up to vote.
Police also reported that 91 Colombians who are listed as missing, supposedly “voted” in the first round election.
Given the fact that no candidate received the majority vote to win the first round election outright, the two most voted for candidates, Juan Manuel Santos and Antanas Mockus, will now face-off in a second round election scheduled for June 20.
