A new study by consulting firm Mercer shows that the quality of life in Bogota has improved in the last two years, reported El Tiempo on Friday.
According to Mercer’s Quality of Living study, which ranks cities to help governments and multinational companies compensate employees fairly when placing them on international assignments, conditions in the Colombian capital have improved since 2009.
Out of the 221 cities listed, Bogota has risen in ranking from 134th last year to 132nd this year.
Rankings depend on a variety of considerations, including political, social and socio-cultural context, health, education and public services.
Bogota’s rise in ranking is predominantly due to a perceived increase in security in the city.
Other South American cities that were listed above Bogota in the ranking include Argentine capital Buenos Aires, at 78th place, and Brazilian capital Brasilia, at 104th place. In first place was Austria’s capital city, Vienna.
This year, for the first time, Mercer also conducted a study into the ecological awareness of each city – looking at availability of drinking water, waste disposal methods and drainage systems – in which Bogota was again ranked 134th.
