Former DAS director Carlos Arzayus appeared before the Supreme Court Tuesday, revealing that the Colombian security agency has been using illegal wiretaps and surveillance since 1971, according to Europa Press.
Arzayus reiterated that the agency had a list of eighteen names of people who were under constant monitoring, including former Bogota Mayor Luis Eduardo Garzon, presidential candidate Gustavo Petro and Senator Piedad Cordoba.
The former director emphasized that it was not only trade unionists, judges, and human rights defenders that had been watched.
Speaking after the first meeting of the Senate committee on DAS, Justice and Interior Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio said that he had also been under surveillance by the intelligence agency.
DAS director Felipe Muñoz was expected to present a report to the Colombian Congress Tuesday, recommending that the agency be dismantled.
