President Juan Manuel Santos announced on Thursday that Medellin, Colombia’s second largest city, will host the annual meeting of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 2015.
Colombia won the bid for the 21st general assembly meeting of the UNWTO after beating out Cambodia in a head-to-head competition, where both countries held festive nights representing their culture to vie for the meeting. “Colombia Night” came out ahead much to the delight of Santos according to the travel website, Travel Update.
“Colombia is the place for tourism today, and for the future of tomorrow,” said Colombia’s President.
“This reflects how people see us from the outside. All sides see that Colombia has great potential and that Colombia is a great country,” added the head of state.
Sergio Diaz-Granados, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, commented, “This is an excellent opportunity for the country to show what tourism in Antioquia offers. It is recognized around the world for its beautiful scenery and the warmth of its people.”
Medellin was selected as the 2015 location by 156 UN representatives.
