A Bogota taxi driver who was arrested for being an accomplice in last week’s murder of a DEA agent in Colombia’s capital claimed to be innocent Tuesday.
According to the suspect’s defense attorney, Giraldo Acosta, his client had nothing to do with the homicide and has been implicated only because he drove one of the taxis involved in the killing during the morning shift.
The attorney told Colombian press his client “did not take part in the crime they are investigating.”
According to Acosta, his client voluntarily and spontaneously surrendered to authorities after seeing on television that the taxi he was driving had allegedly been involved in the homicide that spurred a massive man hunt.
“On Monday, he presented himself at the office of [police investigation unit] SIJIN to notify [the police] that a car that had been on TV is the one he is driving,” said the lawyer.
The suspect subsequently and voluntarily left the car with the police to investigate, Acosta said.
According to the lawyer, his client knows one of the other suspects in the homicide case as both drive the same taxi in turns.
Colombian police arrested four men on Monday, all suspected of involvement in the allegedly robbery and killing of DEA agent James “Terry Watson” who was murdered after leaving a popular nightlife area in the north of the Colombian capital.
