Colombian presidential candidates came together on Thursday and signed an agreement saying they will respect the principles of the Constitution, reported El Espectador.
It is the first time in the history of Colombia that presidential candidates from all ends of the political spectrum have come together in agreement to exercise the office of the presidency under common principles.
The 10-point agreement reads as follows:
1. The ends do not justify the means.
2. Violence is contrary to peace, and this should be promoted throughout the country.
3. In a democratic state, the state retains an exclusive monopoly over the use of force
4. State bodies must act in strict compliance with the Constitution, the Law, and International Law.
5. The seperation of powers and balance between institutions are principles of democracy, and must be defended and respected by all public servants.
6. The independence and effectiveness of justice are crucial values in a state based on laws.
7. Political parties should oppose corruption, impunity, and poor political practices.
8. It is the duty of a democratic state to be inclusive and not to discriminate against its citizens for any reason.
9. The development of a country should be in harmony with conservation of the environment.
10. Foreign policy should be guided by national interest above partisan differences.
The agreement was signed by all of the presidential candidates, though the signing ceremony was only attended by candidates Sergio Fajardo, Gustavo Petro, Rafael Pardo, and Antanas Mockus, with the remaining candidates having sent a delegate in their place.
The Colombian presidential elections are slated for May of this year.
