Southern Colombia FARC attack undermines peace talks: Govt

An alleged FARC attack which lead to the death of four prison guards and one inmate in south Colombia “undermines” the chances of an ongoing peace process to succeed, the interior minister said Tuesday.

“Any type of violence at this moment is undermining the possibilities of the peace process,” said Interior Minister Fernando Carillo, while referring to Tuesday’s “FARC attack” as “deplorable.”

On Wednesday morning, Juan Carlos Pinzon, Colombia’s Minister of Defense, attributed the attack to the FARC’s 3d Front.

“The first inquires indicate the FARC’s 3d Front arrived at the location, ambushed this group of INPEC [prison authority] functionaries and assassinated them,” Pinzon said.

Four INPEC functionaries and one prison inmate died on Tuesday when their vehicle was ambushed on a road connecting the towns of Florencia and San Vicente del Caguan in the southern Caqueta department.

FARC rebels and government negotiators are currently seated in the Cuban capital of Havana to put an end to nearly fifty years of armed conflict.
