Colombian senator Piedad Cordoba denounced on Sunday that some of her supporters in the south-west of the country received threats not to vote for her.
In a press release issued by the politician on the day that Colombia elects Congress, she speaks of a “very delicate situation, since it has to do with groups associated with drugs trafficking and paramilitarism”.
“This puts at risk the persons that support my work in that region,” she said, referring in particular to the departments of Choco and Valle del Cauca.
“These are the regions that are most affected by the threats and the persecutions of persons that come to support the campaign of Piedad Cordoba, which puts at risk the electoral transparency, in a territory that has always shown its support for the senator in previous elections.”
The senator claims that those that issue the threats want people to vote for fellow Liberal Party candidate Sigifredo Lopez, who happened to be one of the hostages liberated by the FARC following negotiating from Cordoba.
Cordoba aims to keep her seat in the Colombian senate in Sunday’s elections.
