Antioquia and Magdalena name Miss Colombia competitors

The departments of Antioquia and Magdalena have both selected candidates over the past week to participate in this year’s Miss Colombia.

Oriana Galofre Charris, 23, fought off competition from seven other Caribbean beauties to be crowned Miss Magdalena. The university student studies international relations and speaks three foreign languages – English, French and Italian.

Newspaper El Heraldo described the student as a woman who “confronts life’s challenges with intelligence,” and claimed she was optimistic about her chances at the national competition.

“I have great faith in myself and in my preparation,” Charris was quoted in the newspaper.

In Antioquia, a panel of judges chosen by TV channel Cosmovision,  elected Medellin-native Carolina Crovo to represent the northwestern department. Colombian media describes the 20-year-old student and model as a keen musician, having played the saxophone and clarinet since childhood.

Crovo claims it took her two years to prepare for the Miss Antioquia competition and she put a lot of work into getting into shape. Radio Caracol reported that she has not had surgery, nor is she interested in “surgical intervention” in the future.

Antioquia has not won the national beauty pageant since 1996 when Clauda Elena Vasquez, who is now married to Colombian pop star Carlos Vives, represented the department.

Oriana Glofre Charris and Carolina Crovo will compete for the title of Miss Colombia at the forthcoming beauty contest in Cartagena, which was established in 1934.
