At least two vehicles have been set on fire during a series of FARC attacks on the Pan-American Highway in southwestern Colombia, authorities said Tuesday.
A group of armed men on Monday reportedly set fire to two vehicles, including a public minibus, while firing bullets at a truck in the southwestern Colombian department of Cauca, a hotbed of guerrilla activity.
“Two vehicles were incinerated, including one belonging to public transport company Cootraslaboyana and another that has not yet been identified. In addition, there was a truck that had crashed or had its engine shot,” Cauca police commander, Ricardo August Alarcon, was quoted as saying in El Tiempo.
There were also reports of clashes between the guerrillas and army troops at a checkpoint on the Rio Oveja bridge on the highway.
The men “made a few shots from a distance, but it did not last long” soldier Henry Piraquive told Radio Santa Fe.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the attacks and authorities said they were able to keep the highway open.
