Former Colombian university rector indicted for bribing paramilitary

The former rector of a university in northern Colombia, was indicted Thursday over allegations she tried to bribe a paramilitary commander to not incriminate her in a murder case.

Silvia Gette, the former rector of the Autonomous University of the Caribbean in Barranquilla, will stand trail on charges that she reportedly bribed Edgar Ignacio Fierro, alias “Don Antonio,” to convince him to change his story on a homicide in which the former rector is implicated.

According to the prosecutor, the alleged bribe was uncovered following a phone call made to prosecutors by the paramilitary chief himself on February 9, stating that a large sum of money would be offered to him if he changed his story on the murder. Authorities then caught, red-handed, Gette’s lawyer turning over $136,000 to the emissary of Don Antonio.

The murder victim was the son-in-law of a founding partner of the university that Silvia worked for. The victim was allegedly murdered by the extradited “Jorge 40,” according to Don Antonio.
