Colombia’s senate president publishes poetry as tribute to conflict victims

Colombia’s Senate President Roy Barreras will release a collection of 23 poems inspired by the victims of the country’s armed conflict at the 2013 Bogota Book Fair on Wednesday.

The poetry book is titled “May peace be with you” , and will be launched at Bogota’s 26th annual book fair on Wednesday. According to El Tiempo, Roy Barreras spent many sleepless nights trying to convey his solidarity with Colombia’s victims through poetic verse. The poems were reportedly inspired by photographs of victims of the armed conflict that Barreras had seen

The 23 poems have since been edited by publishing company “Planeta” and compiled in a book, which features a prologue by Pedro Alejo Gomez Vila, the head of Bogota’s Silva Poetry House, a non-profit organisation promoting poetry in Colombia.

For every purchase of the book, a contribution will be made to the Visible Victim’s Foundation, a charity founded by journalist Diana Sofía Giraldo, which seeks to raise awareness for the victims of Colombia’s violent conflict.

The book launch will take place at 11AM in the Manuel Mejia Vallejo auditorium in Bogota’s “Corferias” business and exhibition center.

Bogota’s book fair began on April, 18 and concludes on Wednesday. This year’s fair features over 400 guests and over  51,000 square meters are dedicated to the exhibition. In 2012 a reported 415,000 visitors attended the book fair over the 14 day duration of the festival.
