Colombian congressional candidates on Tuesday accused the sons of President Alvaro Uribe of favoritism, after the young men endorsed a Partido de la U member running for Congress.
In a letter to Uribe, signed by 17 Partido de la U candidates, Carlos Rafael Moreno complains that the Uribe brothers’ praise of Bogota candidate David Rodriguez amounts to “unfair treatment”.
The letter acknowledges that the boys have the right to free speech but requests that Uribe speak to his sons “so that we all stand before the public on March 14 on the same footing.”
Moreno said that those that signed the letter and Rodriguez were all from the same party and should therefore have the same opportunity to “campaign without the favoritism that comes from having the support of the presidential family.”
Tomas Uribe responded to the criticisms by saying he and his brother had known Rodriguez, who worked on Uribe’s two presidential campaigns, for ten years.
He added that he and his brother would be happy to endorse other Partido de la U candidates who would like the publicity.
