Since the eruption of the Galeras volcano in southern Colombia at the end of last year experts have reduced risk warnings for the area from red to yellow alert, reported El Espectador on Wednesday.
Throughout 2009 the volcano erupted three times and at the time of the latest eruption on December 2 authorities in the region reported a “very high ash cloud” and urged the 8,000 people living near the volcano to evacuate.
The risk of a volcanic eruption in the area has now reduced significantly.
Working with the Volcanic and Seismological Observatory in San Juan de Pasto, the Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining has been closely monitoring the volcano and has said that seismic activity in the area is low in strength and frequency.
The volcano’s yellow alert risk warning means that the seismic and volcanic activity of Galeras is currently minimal.
