New Zealand officially recognized the FARC as a terrorist organization in a move to “reaffirm its commitment to the international fight against terrorism,” the nation’s prime minister announced Wednesday.
Prime Minister John Key said New Zealand wants to ensure that it cannot be used as a base for terrorists. Officially recognizing the FARC as a terrorist group means any funds the organization may have in the country can be frozen and it is now illegal for New Zealand citizens to support the group in any way.
Any citizen who works with the FARC faces up to fourteen years in jail, El Tiempo reports.
The pacific nation also declared organizations from Kurdistan and Somalia to be terrorist.
