National police director Oscar Naranjo on Monday announced a plan to station a policeman on every four blocks in every city of Colombia.
Naranjo told Caracol Radio that he hoped the new surveillance model, based on a criminology study, would revolutionize surveillance work in Colombia.
The new plan is a response to the increase in crime and violence in major cities around the nation.
Naranjo also announced the creation of new metropolitan police forces in cities where none existed previously “in order to provide greater attention to urban centers”.
The new model will be revised every six months to assess its progress, El Tiempo reported. Factors that will be evaluated will be efficiency in the protection of citizens, police presence, response times and police treatment of citizens.
