Colombia’s foreign minister on Friday said his country will denounce Venezuela before the Organization of American States and the United Nations for its alleged violation of Colombian airspace with a helicopter.
From Davos, where Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez and President Alvaro Uribe are attending the World Economic Forum, Bermudez demanded a “clear and convincing explanation” from Caracas as to why the military helicopter entered Colombian territory.
“We are considering bringing this issue to the OAS and eventually we will see if we take it to the UN,” said the foreign minister, following Venezuela’s denial that a helicopter had crossed the Colombian border.
Bermudez said that Colombia had already sent an official complaint to the Venezuelan government about the alleged incursion.
The accusation comes amid tensions between the two countries over a U.S.-Colombia pact that allows the U.S. military to use Colombian military bases and airports, and long-time accusations that the leftist government in Caracas is supporting guerrillas in Colombia.
