Colombia’s Inspector General’s Office announced it will investigate whether President Alvaro Uribe illegally tried to influence the upcoming Congressional elections.
During an official visit to the city of Soacha, just south of Bogota, last Sunday, the president allowed candidates from the pro-government De La U, ADN and PIN parties to speak and promote their candidacy.
One of the candidates was former ambassador to South Africa and candidate for ADN, who that day told the press that his campagn was not financed by drug money, but by a South African “faggot.”
The opposition Liberal Party and an NGO monitoring the elections had urged the inspector general to investigate the possibly illegal promotion of coalition candidates by the head of state.
