The city of Barranquilla is bursting with activity, with pre-carnival festivities kicking off the legendary one-month party that coincides with Colombia’s bicentennial celebrations.
On January 16, the elected Queen of Carnival will officially open the festival. The theme of this year’s carnival is “Tradition lives in Colombia,” and the event will honor the Andean nation’s founding fathers.
La Republica reported that more than 250,000 dancers from 450 folk dance groups have gathered in the city to partake in this unforgettable celebration. Tourists can look forward to a new cable car in the city, as well as the usual festivities held during carnival.
In 2003, UNESCO recognized Carnaval de Baranquilla as an Official Cultural Patrimony of the Oral Tradition.
