A Colombia congresswoman who was arrested for suspected ties with paramilitaries was freed on Friday after a judge ruled that the legal time limit for the case had passed.
According to a decision made by the Supreme Court, Zulema Jattin was released Thursday after the deadline for resolving her legal status expired, in the case being brought against her for “conspiracy to commit crime.”
Investigations into Jattin began two years ago after her name was discovered on the computer of extradited paramilitary leader Rodrigo Tovar Pupo, alias “Jorge 40,” and also in a statement by AUC paramilitary leader Salvatore Mancuso.
Jattin was chairman of the House of Representatives from 2004 to 2005. In 2006 she was elected as a senator for the Partido de la U.
She had been under house arrest since her detainment began in early 2009, reported El Tiempo.
