DAS agents have arrested a local government official and his wife on suspicion of being spies for the FARC front operating in the region of Cauca.
Mauricio José Cerón García was serving as an administrative assistant in the Department of Public Affairs of the municipality and is alleged to be, along with his wife Evelyn Zirley Hernández Vargas, part of a “support network” of the FARC Sixth Front, Caracol Radio reported Tuesday.
According to the intelligence agency, the official was using his office to identify contractors working with the city and then pass their names on to the rebels, who used them for purposes of extortion.
Ceron and his wife, known by the nickname of ‘The Informant’, had also “bought war materials for the terrorist organization,” the DAS said.
Cerón García and Hernández Vargas were captured in the urban area of Toribio in the Cauca department. The arrests were part of an operation, dubbed “Masanga,” launched in mid-November by the DAS with support of the army, in which three others were also arrested for assisting rebels wounded in combat.
Among those arrested was Eduardo Valencia, who worked as a doctor in Corinth, a town in the same region of Cauca.
