24 Colombian mayors from regions that border Venezuela asked the National Government Monday for UN presence to mediate the crisis in the area.
In addition to UN intervention the officials also proposed that a specific ministry be created to take charge of the issues relating to the Venezuela – Colombia frontier line, reported news site CMI Monday.
During a meeting with the Interior and Justice Minister, Fabio Valencia Cossio, the local mayors demanded greater government presence in the border territories to manage the effects of Colombia’s current diplomatic crisis with Venezuela.
In response, Cossio revealed that a committee had already been created in collaboration from the Foreign Ministry to deal with problems along the frontier regions.
Diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Colombia remain frozen and tense due to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s sustained rejection of the U.S. – Colombian military agreement.
