Colombian President Alvaro Uribe announced a plan Friday to recruit youth to the police force by offering them educational and laboral opportunities when they complete their service.
Uribe said the government’s aim is to recruit 3 thousand youths of at least 18 years of age from Bogota, Cali and Medellin, Caracol Radio reported.
“We guarantee these 3 thousand citizens a trade or technological diploma, as well as work opportunities when they finish their term in the police service,” the president announced.
Uribe also announced the government hopes to increase the number of community police from 7 thousand to 15 thousand, as well as the creation of a group of citizens informants to assist in the capture of murders and other criminals.
