A number of Medellin families allow tourists to stay in their homes, offering an insight into urban paisa culture and a chance to mingle with the locals.
The idea sprung from the mind of Juan Fernando Trujillo, who started the project five years ago.
“I wanted to offer a different experience to tourists,” Trujillo says. “Through this project, tourists can get to know the culture and the people better than by staying in a hotel or hostel and interact better with those living in Medellin,” he adds.
The young paisa has so far found six families from all sorts of neighborhoods to allow tourists to stay with them for a week.
“They are normal families that want to show a different side of Medellin and like interacting with foreigners. You know how paisas are, they are always interested in learning from other cultures,” says Trujillo.
During the stay, a tourist is offered food, laundry service, Spanish classes, two tourist outings and a way to escape the obvious places where tourists hang out.
