Orchid cultivators from around the world will gather at the Cali Orchideorama from November 20 until November 22 to display their finest flowers.
An international panel of judges will be judging these stunning plants and results will be posted by the American Orchid Association. Cultivators compete from such far off locations as Taiwan, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and the U.S.
The orchid festival will feature more than 5,000 orchids from around the world and will also include a bonsai exposition and a tribute to Christmas featuring orchids in the form of the classic nativity scene.
Oscar Acevedo, President of the Orchid Society, stated that this year the Association will be launching a stamp collection of 12 stamps featuring Colombian orchids. The minister of communications will be commemorating the event.
According to the Colombian Connection, Colombia has the second greatest number of orchid species, following the country of Brazil boating between 3,500 and 3,800 species.
Orchids are an endangered species and are protected by the International Convention for endangered species, flora, and fauna. This treaty is also recognized in Washington, DC.
