Colombia’s Supreme Court is demolishing the country’s constitution by refusing to elect a new Prosecutor General from the presidency’s shortlist, the country’s deputy Interior and Justice Minister said Tuesday.
“If the court starts to demand requirements to elect the new prosecutor general, the constituionality gets lost,” deputy Minister Miguel Ceballos told W Radio.
In a press statement, released on the Ministry’s website, Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio stressed that the President has fulfilled his constitutional obligations and the court has no option but to elect a Prosecutor General from the three candidates.
The high court has so far neglected to elect a successor to Mario Iguaran, whose term ended in July this year. Media and NGOs in Colombia criticized president Alvaro Uribe’s candidates as none of the three nominees have any experience in penal law.
