Eleven of the seventeen candidates for Barranquilla’s 2010 Queen of Queens Pageant were officially registered Thursday at the Casa del Carnaval.

For the third year running, Barranquilla’s Festival Foundation is holding the Queen of Queens Pageant. The winning contestant, more than just being beautiful and sassy, will need to be a Barranquilla girl who understands the festival and her job, and can lead the Carnival.

This contest to find a community leader will be spread across the next four months in the neighbourhoods of Colombia’s Caribbean city Barranquilla, reports the Foundation.

To participate, applicants must be between 17 and 23 years old, taller than 1.65 meters, have dancing skills, possess “joy and charisma”, and want to assume leadership in their neighborhood, school or work. They must also demonstrate their commitment to the Carnival.

“The goal this year is that the participants gain greater prominence in their fields, have their own events, lead activities and citizen culture initiatives with their neighbors to allow districts and localities of our city to all enjoy the fiesta,” said the Foundation’s director, Carla Celia.

Registration for the pageant will be open until 30 October. From that date onwards, a training and preparation course will begin, in which candidates will take courses on modeling, beauty, glamor, dance, personal development and leadership. In addition, they will also attend cultural workshops on different manifestations of the Carnival.

Judges will take into account the opinions of Barranquilla’s residents as well as considering the girls’ achievements of their stated goals.

Newspaper El Heraldo reports that this Sunday the contestants will appear at their first public event: vallenato singer Pipe Pelaez’s 3pm concert at the district court of La Magdalena.
