A poll held by weekly Semana and television network RCN shows Colombians continue to support a 2010 re-election of their President, Alvaro Uribe.
66 per cent of the respondents said they were in favor of a constitutional change that will allow Uribe to run for a third consecutive term in the next elections.
A bill, calling for a referendum on this constitutional amendment was approved by Congress earlier this year and is currently being tested by the Constitutional Court.
Before 2004, Colombia’s constitution only allowed a president to serve one term. In that year, Congress changed the constitution to allow Uribe his first re-election bid. In the following 2006 elections, Uribe won these elections in the first round.
The re-election is controversial as critics say it is furthering weakening the balance of powers and democratic institutions in the country.
