The United States will respect a possible change in Colombia’s constitution to allow President Alvaro Uribe to run for a third term.
Colombia’s Constitutional Court is currently studying the constitutionality of a referendum that supporters of the President want to be held to call for the constitutional change needed for Uribe to run again in 2010.
“How many terms a president can serve is a sovereign matter of the Colombian people. They can make their own decisions on the constitution, laws and processes. In the end, the country I represent accepts the decision of the Colombian people in that sense,” Brownfield told Caracol Radio.
However, the diplomat did remind the radio station that U.S. President Barack Obama’s had stated he thought two terms are enough when Uribe was visiting Washington in June.
