Demobilized paramilitary leader Freddy Rendon Herrera, also known as
‘El Aleman’, will face murder charges for up to 450 victims, El
Espectador reported Friday.
He has so far been charged with 11 counts and has accepted responsibility for the crimes of aggravated homicide, murder of
protected persons, kidnapping, torture and recruitment of minors, and others.
Rendon Herrera, whose paramilitary group ruled the north of Antioquia before he demobilized, will have to answer for the crimes committed by men under his command, including the murders of Benjamin Grove Chaverra, member of the
UP and mayor of Riosucio (Chocó department); the murder of the governor of the indigenous Unguia, Jesus Castro Mora; the massacre of 14 people in La Horqueta de Tocaima (Cundinamarca); and the 2001 killing of indigenous representative Miguel Barrientos Domicó.
The Prosecutor General will ask that Rendón Herrera be held without bail up until the trial.
‘El Aleman’ is currently enrolled in the Justice and Peace law, which allows him shorter jail sentences in exchange for his testimonies and reparation to his victims. The government has indicated it wants to extradite Rendon Herrera to the United States.
