The Colombian government and supporters of President Alvaro Uribe in
Congress want to modify the electoral census to secure winning the
re-election referendum, senator Alfonso Valdivieso said Thursday.
The current threshold for a referendum like that on Uribe’s possibility to run for a third term is 7,5 milion voters. If less people show up for the vote, the referendum will not be valid and Uribe will not have the opportunity to be re-elected.
According to Valdivieso, a fomer Prosecutor General and member of Cambio Radical party, Uribistas are now trying to lower the numbers of the electoral census from 27 milion to 15 million voters.
This would mean only 4,5 million Colombians will have to take part in the referendum for it to be valid.
Coalition party Cambio Radical opposes Uribe’s third presidential bid and supports its own party leader, German Vargas Lleras as presidential candidate.
