Bogota’s first metro project is expected to have a cost of close to 2
billion US Dollars. This was announced by the city’s mayor on Thursday.
Mayor Samuel Moreno revealed the route that was picked for this project, adding that the total cost is expected to be around 1.92 billion USD.
The route should be 24 kilometers long, of which nine are above ground and the remaining 15 underneath. Running from the Portal de las Americas in the south-west of the city, to 100th Street in the north, it is expected to relieve the traffic problems in those areas of Bogota.
From de Portal de las Americas, the metro will run towards the center with a a principal station at the Plaza Bolivar. From there, the route turns toward the north to end at Calle 100. This second stretch will be entirely subterranean.
It is expected that construction starts in 2011 and finishes in 2016. Once finished, no less than 40,000 passengers per direction could be transported each hour.
