Colombian President Alvaro Uribe will visit the country’s Supreme
Court Monday to break the deadlock over the election of a
new Prosecutor General.
Uribe had given the court a shortlist of three candidates to lead the Prosecutor General’s Office, but the Supreme Court so far has refused to elect the successor of former PG Mario Iguaran.
All three candidates are criticized because they have no experience with penal law and one of the candidates is under investigation for bribery.
Government sources consulted by Caracol Radio said the President will defend his shortlist and that Uribe consulted both the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Inspector General’s Office about his choice before handing in the shortlist to the court.
Mario Iguaran left office the last day of July. The assistant Prosecutor General has assumedthe responsibilities of Iguaran until the Court appoints a successor.
