Colombian opposition party Polo Democratico Friday denounced that the country’s Police and national intelligence service DAS continue to illegally intercept their communication and are following them, despite a running investigation into these alleged practices.
“There’s not the least doubt that after the debates we had in Congress and in the Bogota City Council about the complaints against government officials ties to groups outside the law that because of that they are trying to connect Polo to illegal issues,” Carlos Gaviria, leader of the Social Democratic party said Friday.
Gaviria filed a complaint at the Prosecutor General’s Office about the alleged ongoing spying.
The Polo leader warned that his party will not be shut up be “thrown in jail” and said that efforts to do so will only lead to accelerated complaints about the Polo’s bad governing by the Uribe administration.
Gaviria said he wants to ask the international community to step in and prevent the government from persecuting Polo, trying to link them to leftist guerrilla movement FARC.
Earlier Friday, newspaper El Espectador reported that according to a Prosecution report, the DAS had not only been spying Colombian opposition politicians and human rights workers, but also had been intercepting communication of the regional director of Human Rights Watch and clergies of the Catholic Church.
