Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Friday said international
organizations are paying a group of lawyers that purposely make false
accusations against members of Colombia’s security forces.
In a video message for military school directors, Uribe stressed the government is “obligated to also denounce that there is a group of lawyers paid by international organizations, with ideological slants that hamper an impartial examination of the conducts and the mandamus, and they do it with hate and ideological tendencies. A group of lawyers with the task of making false charges against our Armed Forces.”
Uribe did not specify what group of lawyers he was talking about or what international organizations are involved in the financing of these lawyers.
Colombia’s Prosecutor General is currently investigating 1,200 suspected cases of ‘false positives’, murders committed by members of the security forces to make the war against illegal armed groups look more effective.
According to the government, many of these cases are false and some are trying to amplify the number of human rights violations to discredit the armed forces and the government.
“We are aware of 85 cases of accusations of human rights’ violations
that have been returned by ordinary justice to Military Justice,
because ordinary justice did not find merits. There are now some which
precluded, rulings of non imprisonment, and non guilty rulings,” Uribe said.
